My iPod Touch doesn’t have a built-in GPS unit. Yet it has a setting for turning on or off Locations and many apps ask to use it to determine where I am. So how does it work? Apparently it’s all about SkyHook Wireless. Apple wanted a software-only location solution and SkyHook delivered. Somehow (maybe because I didn’t care before I had my iPod Touch) I missed the news last year.
Okay, so now I know the how, what and why of the Locations setting for an iPod Touch but what about accuracy? So far mine hasn’t been very accurate. But SkyHook has an answer! I was able to register my Wi-Fi Access Point with SkyHook and hopefully within a few days my Location should be a whole heck of a lot more accurate… at least when I’m at home.
