We all know that what we saw at E3 was not exactly what we’ll see at home after we all run out to buy the XBOX 360 and/or PS3. AnandTech has an interesting article covering developer’s real world expectations for each next-gen console.

Speaking under conditions of anonymity with real world game developers who have had first hand experience writing code for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 hardware (and dev kits where applicable), we asked them for nothing more than their brutal honesty. What did they think of these new consoles? Are they really outfitted with the PC-eclipsing performance we’ve been lead to believe they have? The answer is actually quite frequently found in history; as with anything, you get what you pay for.

Aha! Duh! And oh yeah….

Microsoft is using Power Mac G5s to power the XBOX 360 game-play demos at E3. So…? G5 systems can only use a GeForce 6800 Ultra or an ATI Radeon X800 XT so what we’re seeing now is not what we’ll see in retail. Yeah? Yeah. Cool. Though, most people wont get that and will go on what they see NOW and think that’s all there is. So Microsoft should speak up, loudly, but they wont… because they’d have to officially mention they’re using Power Mac G5s.

Holy entertainment overload! So maybe half the stuff shown at Sony’s PlayStation 3 press conference was pre-rendered but the tech demos alone were enough to sell me. The games shown just blew me away. I can’t think of anything during the conference that didn’t impress me. Oh, wait, EA showed a few things that were absolutely yawn. But the games… and the power of the Cell, wow wow wow wow! I want a Playstation 3, now! Please? Pretty please? No, really… please?

But I’m still very curious. How’s the online support going to be implemented? It has to be improved over PS2. And is the hard drive going to be optional like before, meaning unused? Don’t like that, if that is the case. But the EyeToy games, and the racing… OMG! Vision Gran Turismo! And, and, and…. I’m just blown away.

You win, Microsoft, I’m impressed. The XBOX 360 might be something.

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion has me drawn in. Project Gotham Racing 3, while I’m in no way interested in racing, looks so very nice. Kameo? I hate to say it, being that it’s a Rare game, but it looks great. Gears of War? Hmmm, could be something fun. But gameplay isn’t everything, is it? Okay, it is… but I like the new controllers. I haven’t held one in my hand, but the new design looks to be a small step towards perfection. The online connections with gamer cards and media this and media that is a really nice touch. Am I happy about micropayments? No. Let me repeat that Microsoft– NO! But we’ll see how much it comes into play.

Microsoft, you’ve impressed me, even after the XBOX never did. So, for now, I’ll keep my eye on the 360.

Bollocks! This is the first E3 in years that I wasn’t at E3 or sitting at home to watch everything ASAP. I’ve only had 30 mins to take a quick glance over everything and so far… I’m terribly disappointed in Nintendo!

Technical specifications on Nintendo’s next-gen codenamed Revolution hardware haven’t been released. Nintendo says their new console is only two or three times as powerful as the Gamecube. “It’s not all about having ‘turbo power,’ ” Nintendo’s Perrin Kaplan told USA Today. “It’s about what you do with it.” Choke! What!? Nice, giant positive way to sell the consumers.

WTF is up with Revolution and why does Nintendo seem to think being only 2 or 3 times more powerful than the Gamecube is okay? Or, even if it turns out to be awesome, whatever it actually is, couldn’t they have oooh, I dunno, stood behind it with a bit more enthusiasm? The Revolution press release is so extremely anti-climatic.

Okay, it uses standard DVDs and it’s backwards compatible. Great for Nintendo to finally do this, but it’s something well, expected, demanded and no big deal. The design is compact, sleek and um, small. Yea. Big whoop. I mean, yeah it kind of looks nice, but the buttons look really, really small. Yes, I’ve seen super huge giant blowup images of it. Well, okay, I do like that it is slot loading instead of using a tray. 512KB of Flash memory sort of perks up my interest a tiny bit and that users can add more memory with standard SD cards… well, hmmm. But this isn’t a HUGE deal.

The Revolution will have downloadable access to 20 years of titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). That’s really cool, but not a system seller.

So, it can be stood vertically on a silver stand. It uses standard DVDs, its backwards compatible and it can be used to play many of Nintendo’s classic titles. It’s 2 to 3 times more powerful than the Gamecube. Where’s the OMG-I-have-to-have-this-factor?

And the Game Boy Micro? Ummm, again… WTF!? A “new” Game Boy Advance? It’s ugly, and has a smaller screen than the original GBA. What is Nintendo thinking?

Nintendo, I’ve never been more disappointed in my life. Please, somehow, bring me some relief over the next few days. Please!
