Now if only I’d seen Brian Mastenbrook’s article on installing Safari 4 without replacing Safari 3 before I installed Safari 4. I’m hoping to uninstall Safari 4 then follow the instructions provided and have both together living in some sort of harmony. That would be sweet.

Brian has “whipped up” a script that will allow one to install Safari 4 “so that it can be run without replacing Safari 3.” Looks simple enough. But any attempt you make (as well as myself) to do so and everything falls apart, don’t go blaming Brian or anyone else… especially me.

Crossing my fingers here, as I just installed the public BETA of Apple’s Safari 4. I installed it yesterday on Christina’s Windows laptop, but that’s not a production box like my Mac here. I figure I’ll have to uninstall the BETA and go back to Safari 3 soon enough, but I couldn’t stand not being able to play with it for at least a little bit on my own system. I made sure to update Glims first, and I’m just having to hope that SafariStand, SpeedDownload, GearsEnabler and ClickToFlash continue to work. So far all seems to be fine.

The crowded bunch of tabs at the top (cuz I have a very bad habit of having too many tabs open) is something I’ll have to get used to but at least I know that if I can’t get used to it there is a way to change Safari 4’s tab handling back to the way Safari 3 does it. While I’m mentioning that, there’s also a bunch of other changes one can makes to Safari 4… some are Mac only though.

Initially, I have to say that I really like it. It does indeed seem to be faster— not simply a placebo effect. I like the top sites page that comes up in a new tabs. I like the way the new History Search works… so far, it’s all rather nice. No crashing (so far) either. Obviously Apple took some notes from Google’s Chrome, which is all fine with me. Google stated from the start that the Chromium source was out and freely about for a reason.

How long will I keep it installed? I can’t keep it for long, even if I love it, as it renders differently than Safari 3 (even if improvedly (?) so) and I don’t have another Mac to do webdev from. Can’t wait for the final release though. Can’t wait for a Mac Pro refresh either, while I’m at it. It’’s well past time I upgraded to an Intel Mac. Apple? ahem

And the UPDATES are pouring in… SpeedDownload now updated for Safari 4. Weeeeeee!

So we hit the town for a nice evening out last night. Thanks to Laura watching the kids we had our first Valentine’s Day out together, alone. We enjoyed a fantastic dinner at Surin’s and then hit the Apple store at Bridge Street. While there I was so tempted to buy a Mac Pro, but I’m waiting, waiting, waiting ’til the next refresh. But we did get Christina an iPod Touch 8GB. She insisted 8GB is enough. Usually I’d argue that but I think she’s probably right this time…. it’s more about the calendar, shopping lists, and other apps with some music than music with a few apps to her.

Buying a case for the bloody thing though, we’re gonna kill each other. She wants an armband type without a flippin’ neoprene (or whatever its called) screen. Something to strap it on her arm… that’s all… without being ugly. So I got her a Griffin Wave (like mine, and it’s awesome, but hers is pink) and we’ll come up with our own armband for it… somehow.

Hey lady, I love you. Best Valentine’s Day evah!

Apple logoI currently have a Power Mac G5 dual 1.8 GHz with 2GB RAM and a Radeon 9700 Pro. It is five years old and I’m dying to update to a modern Intel-based system. I can finally afford one– we budgeted for a new system after we received our tax return and that was deposited into our account today.

So, how long do I wait for the next Mac Pro line update? It’s been a while. It’s been over a year. We’re way past due for a new update. But I’m so anxious to update ASAP… Please Apple, hurry it up!

Just stumbled across nanoc. It’s a “site compiler written in Ruby for building awesome web sites.” That’s all I have to say. No, wait… wow!
