I’m not a huge fan of television in general. But I tend to really enjoy the few shows that I watch. Heroes, House, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, CSI and Jericho were my faves of the 06-07 season.
All of which will return next season… except for Jericho. I get so tired of the networks canceling quality television. All too often the shows I enjoy are the ones that get the boot. Why? Because the shows aren’t brainless. Because the shows ask something of the viewers. We remember though. We don’t let the networks get away with continuing to cancel our shows. Each time a great show is cancelled we’re less and less likely to allow the next great show to hold our attention.. I’ve been burned so often I expect to be disappointed and I’m less likely to tune in to a new show that I hear about. Eventually, these networks will realize they’re really screwing themselves over.
So what is CBS replacing Jericho with? Some silly reality show for pedo-voyeurs– 40 kids camping out in the desert without adult supervision. Nuts to you, CBS!
Showing CBS the same respect they’ve shown the fans– I’ll not be watching CSI, CSI: New York or any other CBS shows next season. That is, unless Jericho is renewed. Will my little protest matter? Perhaps not. But then again..

I saw a piece on CNN this afternoon about high school drop out rates in the United States. I knew the rate was bad, but good grief I had no idea how bad it was getting. The Silent Epidemic was mentioned and I quickly tried to view the site. I was promised a site covering the horrible epidemic that we are facing. Instead, I think everyone else watching CNN had the same idea and I couldn’t get the site to load.
Luckily, when I tried again later I was able to get in. I checked out the link to see statistics for any district in the country. First, I checked out Morgan County. 63% graduation rate. Not so hot. Huntsville City Schools? Even worse– 50-something. Yowch.
See, I grew up in Hoover, AL. What’s the graduation rate for Hoover? 89.8%. What about neighboring city Vestavia Hills where the majority of my friends lived? 95.7%. So… yeah, I have my reasons for being so negative about Morgan and Madison counties. Call me a snob, or whatever you will, but I want my daughter to have access to a school system that can provide for her. I keep hearing how great Grissom is and how Huntsville High isn’t far behind, but.. no. I don’t think so. Yes, I’m aware that Johnson, Lee and some other third school (I don’t remember, I don’t care) are bringing the ratio down, but are they so extremely bad to affect the total city ratio so greatly? If neither Grissom or Huntsville can deliver 80%+ then that’s not good enough. Period.
By the time Aegwyn is a teenager the three boys will be out of school. If we have to, we’re moving. Fairfax County, Virgina.. some of the school systems I saw while out in Washington (gah, any reason to move back out to the Pacific Northwest) or heck, even Hoover again. I really don’t get Huntsville. It’s a town of “good enough” everywhere I look. And for me, that’s far from good enough.

Late night browsing I end up coming across something really cool. favicon2dots will take any favicon from any website and turn into a spiffy image. It also provides a gallery of all the images it has created, sorted by color. I really do like this site. I’ll have to return tomorrow to play with some of my favorite favicons.
Here’s the icon for Casual Hex after it’s been converted.

I get headaches. Bad headaches. I just woke up 30 minutes ago feeling like someone hit me in the back of the head with a baseball bat. The nausea, disorientation and extreme pain always makes me feel like I’m teetering right on the edge of my limits. As if just a little more and I’m gonna lose it, implode, or curl in on myself and mentally snap. It gets so bad I can’t wrap myself around it. I do. Obviously. I haven’t imploded yet. And I’ve had these headaches so many times in the last five years that apparently I’m not going to die or go mad from them, but each time it feels like maybe this one is the one.
Yes, I’ve seen doctors about my headaches. I’ve been to many different kinds of doctors about my headaches. But not a headache specialist. I saw something on television the other morning about dealing with migraines and sometimes having to go through not only many doctors, but sometimes having to go through many headache specialists before a person can find their own individual solution.. am I at the end of a long run-on? I’m typing and looking away from the brightness of the screen (with one eye closed) so who knows when I’m still not fully awake… I’ve lost my train of thought.
Anyway… I need to find a specialist here in Huntsville. For whatever reason these headaches started roughly five years ago. At first I had them almost daily. Now, maybe a few times a month. The pain is absolutely unbearable, completely in control if I let it. But whatever the reason.. I can’t give in to them now. I have Aegwyn to take care of and I don’t have time to lay in bed grasping at sanity.
