Worst case scenerio– how bad is it? With the recent events of Katrina ripping through the coast, especially Louisiana, all on top of the war with Iraq and all of our problems in the MIddle East… I can’t help but wonder just how bad things are right now. Are we getting sugar coated answers from those in charge? I’m not going off here screaming “the sky is falling” or claiming the “end time” is near, nothing like that at all. But, as oil prices skyrocket, is our country’s economy strong enough to handle the situation? How ugly is it going to get? Do I need to start stockpiling? It feels silly to say all of that, but I am beginning to wonder.

So is hurricane Katrina the event that leaves us as the generation that says goodbye to New Orleans? Being under sea level it was always something expected to happen eventually, due to melting ice caps or all sorts of other greenhouse effects. It never occurred to me that a single powerhouse hurricane would be the cause. Just how much can be repaired? How much money will it take? Will it be worth it? Can New Orleans be rebuilt in a way that this sort of problem wont be possible again? The chaos and dreadful misery that has come out of the hurricane and levees breaking is off the scale but how smart is it to rebuild where the same problems will eventually occur again? I’m having a hard time watching the news, just thinking about the long term effects Katrina has brought on everyone. My prayers are will all of the folks who lost loved ones and the rest who face unimaginable hardship getting their lives back in order.

After my hard drive bit the dust on Monday I’ve had to go all week without my Mac. But I finally purchased a new drive this afternoon. After getting it installed (first time with SATA, rather nifty) and OSX installed I had Disk Warrior rip into the old drive. Boy was I surprised when it was able to do a rather incredible job. Disk Warrior went above and beyond in the delivered results. Having a second drive really makes things a whole lot easier when it comes to system maintenance. I’m still working through getting my system set up. I figured since I was already this far into it I’d stick with the clean install and only import what I wanted, leaving out quite a bit of junk that has collected over my first year of learning OSX. Back in a few days with more results…

But before I go– 1) Dot Mac saved my butt in this event many times over. 2) Disk Warrior is worth every penny. 3) Mac OS X rocks. This would have been a much worse nightmare in Windows.

Bah. Funkity funk funk oh funk! Not happy.

The hard drive in my Power Mac bit the dust last night. While we were out enjoying the kids’ soccer games the power failed and my hard drive took a beating. Hours later (1am, I was tired, exhausted and in a lousy mood already) while I was checking out the damage with Disk Warrior for possible repairs the power went out again for a few seconds. It was one of those “something very important is being done, do NOT lose power” moments. I have no idea what was going on with the power as it never ever goes out around here. So now, when I try to boot… it just wont. And I’m not sure what to do. But I’m picking up a second drive ASAP to work from while I try to salvage whatever is left. In the process I’ll be installing Mac OS X 10.4 again, but this time from scratch. Should be an easy ordeal but as I’ve never done it… well, who knows? Beats re-installing Windows. Or so I’m guessing by the upgrade from Panther to Tiger compared to similar Windows efforts. But then as I said, I’ve not done this before so I’m rather in the dark on time it’ll take or how much of a pain it’ll be.

Yesterday I posted a little comment about CNN’s late breaking news on the worm that’s taking down Windows systems around the world. I found it hilarious (although, I do understand that for those hit by it this issue is everything but hilarious) that a worm would lead to late breaking news on CNN. I’m sure the PR folks at MS were pulling their hair out over that. I still haven’t read much of the issue since yesterday. I just haven’t had the time. But whatever Microsoft seems to think by calling it a “low impact” problem well… with so many hit I’d have to disagree.

Mac OS X issues with worms and viruses? None. That’s zero. Wee!
